Mental health is a crucial part of a child’s overall development, yet pediatric mental health issues are increasingly prevalent. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), 20 million adolescents can currently be diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Despite the high prevalence, many children do not receive the necessary care due to factors such as stigma, lack of access to services, and insufficient mental health education.

How does mental health affect Adolescents?

The rapid physical, emotional, and social developmental changes that adolescents face are often significantly impacted by their mental health. With the high academic demands, social relationships, and the search for identity that youth face, it is common for there to be a change in stress, anxiety, and depression. Early recognition and support for mental health challenges are essential to ensure that adolescents can thrive and successfully navigate this critical period of their lives.

Signs and Awareness of Pediatric Mental Health

With all the demanding changes of the adolescent years, youth are more vulnerable to the things around them. Many factors can contribute to feelings of loneliness, rejection, sadness, etc. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that “youth with poor mental health may struggle with school and grades, decision making, and their health”. Mental Health America (MHA) offers a list of signs that we can be aware of when it comes to our children and youth who might be struggling with mental health:

  • Problems with concentration, memory, or ability to think clearly
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feeling sad, empty, hopeless, or worthless
  • Loss of interest in things they used to enjoy
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Changes in sleep
  • Anger outbursts

Other signs or symptoms could include unexplained headaches, stomachaches, or other physical symptoms with no clear medical cause, engaging in dangerous activities, or feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks.
